Fungal Nail Treatments
Do your toenails appear yellow, brittle or thickened?
Then perhaps you suffer from a toenail infection, a condition that will continue to worsen over time if measures are not taken to stop the infection. Pain in your toenails might be an end result. Toenail fungal infections can be caused by heavy foot perspiration, poor shoe/sock ventilation or walking barefoot in damp areas such as a gym or locker room.
What Is Nail Fungus?
Nail Fungus (onychomycosis) is a fungal invasion of the nail plate. It may begin as a white or yellow spot under the top of your nail. As the fungus spreads deeper into your nail, it may cause your nail to discolour, thicken and crumble.
When Should It Be Treated?
Once a nail fungus infection begins, it can persist indefinitely. Furthermore, if left untreated, the fungus can spread to other nails and surrounding skin. The earlier treatment is started, the better the treatment outcome.
What Can Be Done?
All treatment options are discussed at the time of your initial appointment. Fungal nails can be treated with oral and/or topical medications. Following the assessment, a treatment plan is established that may include one or all of the options available.
When Will I See Results?
A nail takes approximately 1 year to re-grow. As you nail grows out, the base should appear healthier.
Will The Infection Re-Occur?
As with all treatments, there is always a chance of re-infection due to presence of fungus in the environment. Steps must be taken to decrease the conditions in which fungus thrives.
